NEVA's PAGE

In 1992, I ran the fan club for The Remingtons.  As most of you probably know, this was a country-rock band that James was in.  For the year or so that they were prominently in the public's eye, they were quite successful, producing two albums and a number one music video.  Included in the fan club package, were four newsletters that I produced.  At one point, I sent these, along with some other things, to Jimmy's mother Neva, (since she is certainly his number one fan, despite my claim!)  In response, I got one of the most wonderful (and one of the longest!) letters I've ever received.

A while back, I wrote to her and asked if she would mind if I shared some of what she wrote with all the fans, featuring excerpts from her letter on her very own page.  She responded and was all for it.  So what follows are some insights, straight from Jimmy's mom, along with some great photos she sent me.  They're from the early eighties - around 1984.  I hope you enjoy NEVA's PAGE!

Dear Fran,

I am Jimmy's Griffin's mother and I want to thank you so much for sending me the fan club package.  I have had Fran Hart's address in my phone book for years, but no phone number.  I knew you were a great fan of Jimmy's, but because of my health and other commitments, I never found time to write.  I think you are a very talented fan club director and I thank you for recognizing Jimmy's talents.

I recognized his talents when he was seven years old.  We started him with accordian lessons at the Central Academy of Music here in Memphis and he had been going over there twice a week.  When the students had their first concert, the parents were invited.  So I fluffed up his little dog and put a ribbon around his neck, with a big, blue bow on top, and we took him to the concert.  After the concert, they cut a record of Jimmy playing "Lady of Spain" on the accordian and Poochie Pie singing until Jimmy stopped playing.  Jimmy has a picture of this.  After the concert, his music teacher took us into the office and told us that Jimmy was playing by ear while the others used music sheets, and they were so proud of him. They told us that he was a child prodigy.

While in California, his public relations man gave a penthouse party for Jimmy and invited the radio, TV and movie people to listen to Jimmy sit on a stool and sing his originals, playing his guitar, with no microphone, and all these people told me he was a child prodigy.  (He was 19 then and had 35 original songs - some country, some popular, some love songs, etc.)

He went to California right after he graduated from Kingsbury High School here in Memphis.   I drove out there a couple of months later because Reprise Records wanted me to sign some papers and they asked me to stay out there with Jimmy as long as I could.   So I stayed for 2 1/2 months.

Later, I found a job in a coffee shop.  Meanwhile, I met a man and he introduced me to his landlady.  She treated us like royalty.  Jimmy had his first single out - Girls Grow Up Faster Than Boys.  Fran - I am going to stop this letter here because I want to send you some pictures and get this in the mail.  I wrote BNA 17 pages about Jimmy and it is not finished yet, but when I get started, I can never end the letter because there is so much to tell about Jimmy's accomplishments and he keeps such a low profile that I will let him edit it.  But I have to tell you that the landlady gave us one of her bachelor apartments and I cooked for all of us.  They all liked my Southern cooking.  I'm talking about cornbread, turnip greens with ham, blackeyed peas, potato salad, banana pudding and ribs.  Everyone loves my peanut butter fudge - men, boys, women, girls - all young and old.  One of Jimmy's favorites is my cabbage rolls.

Fran, I have a sister that lives in Arkansas, that has had health problems.  She lives quietly, but she writes to all the DJs there and she calls them at night because she wants them to know all about Jimmy and The Remingtons. They call her their "late-night caller."  She has such a great sense of humor and she is one of Jimmy's best fans.  She keeps her children and grand-children in Dallas, TX posted on Jimmy and The Remingtons.  She likes their album, but thinks that Jimmy should have sung lead more because for him to stand back and let them lead when he is the best singer has held them back some.   This is according to many of his fans and we agree, but Jimmy says that the label selects the single and who leads it.  I wish John Lindquist would write the BNA executives a letter - or you maybe. I love you all for recognizing Jimmy's talents like I do.
Being his mother, I can't write these letters and it is a shame because I have not been a pushy mother.  I also recognize other great talents.  I had an executive at Reprise say to me "Mrs. Griffin, there are mothers and there are great mothers...and you are a great mother!"   This letter has not been edited by Jimmy.  I hope there is not anything in it that will embarass him.

Fran, as I was closing this letter, Jimmy called me from Nashville and told me that he and Marti were going to pick up another BMI award at a celebration tonight for writing "You Can Depend On Me" with a co-writer who is not a Remington.  They wrote this song for the group Restless Heart.  Jimmy has some other BMI awards, but I'm not sure how many.  I like this song, and in my opinion, I think that it is the best song they (Restless Heart) have.
I hope to write more later.   It would help me if you would write me and ask questions.  I do not know what you would like to know or print.  I want to thank you for hanging in there for Jimmy and being such a great fan club director.
