David Gates - Australian Interview - September 27, 1996

The following is an account and transcript of an interview with David Gates on Australian TV. This was supplied by Gary Hartman of Australia and I thank him so much for providing it.

David Gates made an appearance on the Midday Show which is an Aussie Show shown throughout Australia on the "Nine Network." David was on the show on Friday September 27.

He looked relaxed, very fit and wore casual clothes including a cowboy style hat. He performed alone, no backing band, and he was in the studio which obviously means he is in Australia. The host of the show is a lady by the name of Kerry Ann. (Kerry Ann is late 30's, early 40's - I think.)

She introduced David by saying.........

"If you think back, if you can, to the 70's, everyone used to sing along to hit songs like 'I Want To Make It With You', 'If A Picture Paints a Thousand Words' and 'Baby I'm a Want You'. Who knew then that we'd still be singing those classics today? Please welcome the man who recorded and wrote those classics, the lead singer of Bread, David Gates."

David then sang 'Everything I Own' - he sounded great, maybe even better than he did in the 70's.

To applause, Kerry Ann came onto the stage......

KA: Beautiful, spectacular.
DG: Oh, so you remember that one do you?
KA: Ah.....my mother told me about it.
DG: Oh yeah right.
KA: How many number one songs did you have out of that era.
DG: Believe it or not, only one number one, but lots of top 5 records and gold records. But 'Make It With You' was the only number one. It's tough to make it to that number one spot.
KA: 'Make It With You', I love that - could you do a few bars.

David sang about 15 seconds of 'Make It With You'.

KA: Oh yes (Applause). Is there a favourite you remember writing and love to do.
DG: You know it's kind of like which one is your favourite child of your kids - it's hard to pick a favourite. I think if I could only have written one song it would be 'If' because its been played at so many weddings, and its so remembered, and so many people have recorded it.
KA: Oh, a few bars of that.
DG: Oh god, I knew you were going to ask me. Come to the concert and I'll do it for you.
KA: OK, I guess I'll have to. The name Bread - you wrote all those, you sang them all with the group Bread. Where did the name come from?
DG: Bread came off a bread delivery truck at the moment we were trying to pick a name.
KA: You're not serious?
DG: I'm dead serious - I'm glad it wasn't a rubbish or garbage truck or something like that.
KA: It was as simple as that?
DG: Just as simple as that. I mean we were looking at automobiles and trees and floors. I mean all kinds of things - then here comes a bread truck.
KA: Where were you standing?
DG: We were standing in North Hollywood, California.
KA: On the street?
DG: Yeah, another innocuous generic place, you know, here comes this truck.......I know, it's kind of embarrassing really.
KA: That 26 years since you had that first big hit with Bread...why has it taken so long for the group to get back together, because you're starting your international tour shortly?
DG: Everybody has been so, you know, busy and off doing separate things. A couple of guys in Nashville, one in Washington, I'm in California. We just haven't had the time to get together and finally now we're setting aside the time to do this tour we always wanted to do in the 70's but never could. By golly, now we're going to do it.
KA: Well we can't wait.

Kerry Ann then plugged the Essentials CD and the forthcoming Oz tour. She then asked David to play 'If' to the commercial break, which he did (although he didn't seem too keen the first time she asked).
